ESI is pleased to announce that the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has selected AIAA Fellow Robert C. Winn, Ph.D., P.E., as winner of its 2017 AIAA Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes Winn for "over three decades of exemplary service and leadership to AIAA," including 11 years on the board of directors. He has also served as Vice President for Technical Activities, Vice President for Finance, and held key roles on numerous technical and administrative committees. Winn was the founder and first chair of the Emerging Technologies Standing Committee.

ESI welcomes Sangjoon "Jay" Sohn, Ph.D. to the team as a Senior Consultant in our Mechanics practice. Dr. Sohn is based in our Illinois office and brings a strong track record working in both management and technical roles, and a wealth of experience in the engineering analysis of mechanical components. Dr. Sohn's expertise in finite element analysis have made him a go-to resource for manufacturers and engineering firms serving the energy and oil and gas industries, where his projects have ranged from design and analysis of pipelines and pressure vessels to material degradation assessments and residual life predictions of mechanical components at power plants and petrochemical facilities.

ESI is pleased to welcome Steven Faupel as a Staff Consultant in our Civil/Structural practice group. Steven is based in our Doral, Florida office, where he brings significant experience in the analysis, design, construction inspection and forensic investigation of residential and commercial structures, including both high rise and low rise buildings. Steven is also well-versed in building codes and proficient in the different engineering software packages used for engineering analysis and design.

ESI is pleased to welcome Jason Babcock, Ph.D. to the ESI team as a Senior Consultant in our Materials practice. Dr. Babcock brings a wealth of experience in materials engineering and forensic analysis, augmented by a strong background in general chemistry. A born problem-solver, Jason is skilled at designing and building experimental apparatus and has hands-on experience performing a broad range of tests to determine the strength, physical, chemical and wear properties of different materials.

In the wake of a fire, there are an onslaught of questions about what caused the fire and why -- and whether there were factors that contributed to or precipitated the event. Investigating a fire can be a complex and painstaking task, and often requires the expertise of a forensic electrical engineer. ESI is pleased to welcome Daniel Spankie to the ESI team as a Senior Consultant in our Pharmaceutical & Medical Device sub-practice. Mr. Spankie will be based in our North Carolina office, where he brings over 19 years of experience in pharmaceutical and medical device regulatory compliance, and a broad background in electronic records/systems auditing and data integrity for regulated environments. Mr. Spankie also has specific expertise in quality control, chemistry, and analytical method development.

ESI is pleased to welcome Jean "Jon" van Poppel, P.E. to the team as a Senior Consultant in our Auto and Marine practice. Mr. van Poppel will be based in our Houston office, where he brings a wealth of experience in automotive engineering, including eight years in accident reconstruction and 15 years as a Principal Product Engineer for a tier 1 automotive supplier of restraint systems. While there, Mr. van Poppel was responsible for developing airbag and seatbelt systems to be used in the serial production of new vehicles - and ensuring the designs met or exceeded all requirements for frontal, side and rollover crash mode conditions.

ESI is pleased to welcome Chris Porto, P.E., CFEI to the team as a Staff Consultant in our Georgia office. Mr. Porto brings extensive experience working as a mechanical and fire protection engineer in the design, testing, inspection, and commissioning of facilities for the Navy, Air National Guard, Air Force, Army, customs and border protection, state, and private facilities. His fire protection engineering expertise includes assessment of building life safety features, code compliance evaluations, and fire suppression/extinguishing system failure analyses.

ESI is pleased to announce that Sr. Consultant Joseph Arruda has published an article, "Determination of the Standard of Care in the Tire Service Industry" in Rubber & Plastic News. Co-authored with Sr. Consultant Jack Auflick, Ph.D. and John Daws, Ph.D., P.E., the paper recommends a methodology for determining standard-of-care for tire service professionals.

November 2016

On November 15, 2016, Senior Consultant Mark Lewis, P.E. in our Dallas office began his 2-year term as an appointed commissioner of the Building Standards Commission for the City of Plano, Texas. Mr. Lewis's appointment is based on his extensive experience interpreting building codes and his generous contributions of time and expertise to help further the commission's efforts to promote public health and safety through rigorous enforcement of applicable building construction and property maintenance standards.

ESI is pleased to announce that Jeffrey Kuehn, P.E. has joined the team as a Senior Consultant in our Mechanics practice group. Mr. Kuehn will be based in our O'Fallon, Missouri office, where he brings extensive experience designing and constructing mechanical, electrical, fire and plumbing (MEFP) systems in commercial buildings, including HVAC, fire protection systems and standard voltage electrical systems.

ESI is pleased to announce that Casey Smith has joined the team as a Sr. Technologist in our Dallas office. Mr. Smith most recently hails from the steel manufacturing industry, where he gained significant hands-on experience in material characterization, microscopy and metallurgical laboratory testing.

ESI recently received a Federal Firearms License, which allows us to ship and receive firearms, ordnance and ammunition directly from our Dallas office. There are strict requirements for obtaining this license, which creates a more streamlined process for us to provide a broad range of firearm related laboratory testing and services to manufacturers, dealers, and government organizations, including firearm related accident investigation and reconstruction, material and mechanical failure analysis, firearm and safety design review and testing, fabrication modeling/support, and firearm and ammunition performance evaluation. ESI was well-represented at the 28th Annual Occupational Ergonomics and Safety Conference in Chicago, Illinois - a leading international forum for practitioners and researchers involved in the design and analysis of safe human work systems. This year's lineup of speakers included ESI Principal Dennis Brickman, Principal & Director of Biomechanics and Safety Erick Knox, and Staff Consultant Julius Roberts presenting on a range of important safety topics, including: a residential elevator entrapment, a shelving cart accident, and an incident involving automatic sliding doors.

ESI is pleased to announce that our Fire, Process and Electrical practice is setting the stage for a new chapter of growth by separating into two distinct practices, Electrical Engineering and Fire & Explosion Investigation, effective June 1, 2016. As part of this new development, Michael D. Pratt, P.E. has been promoted to Principal and Director, with strategic and operational oversight over the Fire and Explosion Investigation practice. Principal and Director Tom Bajzek, P.E., CFEI will continue to lead our Electrical Engineering practice.

The tragic loss of EgyptAir Flight 804 on May 19, 2016 has prompted an onslaught of questions about what caused the plane to disappear off radar over the Mediterranean Sea with 66 people aboard. Mark your calendars! Our Plastics Failure Analysis workshops are back by popular demand. This August, ESI is hosting another round of workshops highlighting the principles of failure analysis and failure prevention in plastic products. Find out how we test and analyze the failure of plastic products and learn about ways to prevent failures through quality control/testing and application of proper stress analysis and design methods. The seminars will be held in our Aurora, IL office from August 8-12, 2016, and attendees of the August 8-9 workshop will receive a copy of "Fractography in Failure Analysis of Polymers." ESI is pleased to announce that Jennifer D. Ahearn has joined the team as a Sr. Managing Consultant based out of Norcross, Georgia office. Ms. Ahearn has a proven track record helping pharmaceutical and medical device companies on large-scale remediation projects, and has consulted with clients in the drug, medical device, and biologics industries both domestically and internationally. She also brings specific expertise in a range of FDA regulatory and compliance matters, including audits, inspection readiness assessments, conflict resolution, operational process evaluations, technical assessments, strategy development, and risk remediation.
